We also know they created the crystals that the Covenant are after and that these crystals make it possible to travel through time. Which I find quite strange is that some organic lifeform creates a weapon capable of destroying all organic life in the universe, why would they do something like that? That weapon would destroy them as well.
-
Minor correction. Each Halo only kills organisms of sufficient size and cognitive ability (quoting 343 GS) within 25,000 light years (roughly 1/4 of the galaxy). Also we don't know that the crystals can alter time. In First strike they were able to move faster than conventional travel would allow because they were 'fated' (they had to be on Reach at a specific moment to fulfil an event in space-time) to pick the crystal up. What we know of physics says this can happen even without external influence because, since they had to be there, the universe conspired to create unique conditions that allow them to be where they were meant to be. A similar situation might have happened with Melissa, though I must admit this would be hard for an average fan to swallow. Tarot

If the universe is as big as "they" say it is, then it's possible that Melissa came from another "Earth" billions of lightyears away It'd certainly fix any time-related headaches the crystal theory, although would then do a great job of creating distance-related ones instead. -Kachi

Yep, my brain hurts just from thinking about it

Makes mine hurt slightly less than "Well if Melissa is here and Durga is there, how do they communicate, and if Melissa is the later form of Durga then... and more headaches ensure... :/

I'm actually beginning to think that Durga's a fragment/clone twin of Melissa either sent forward in time or left behind when she crashed, but that’s just a pet theory. Fortunately in either case, quantum physics has an answer in the form of entanglement, which is where you ‘split’ an element like an electron into two identical particles. The interesting thing here is that what happens to one of the particle ‘twin’ instantly happens to the other so in theory you could send messages over almost infinite distances almost instantly (apparently there is slight degradation for every few thousand light years transmitted) so long as each end had one of the twins. Something that’s interesting about entanglement is that it might not be influenced by time – some of the entangled particles we’ve created have acted very oddly – so this process might be viable even when communicating with something in the future. Maybe they weren't organic? One other theory I've heard is that the Forerunner turned into the Flood, and knowing they would do so, constructed the Halos. But I can't imagine them being so self sacrificing, somehow, and the mechanics of them turning into the Flood elude me... -Kachi

Hadn't heard that one, but like you say it doesn't make much sense; why change into something only to develop a weapon to kill yourself? The idea that they devolved themselves into something small and dumb so that Halo wouldn't kill them (the thing being the apelike creatures we evolved from, perhaps on a preset course) has more credence as humans, or at least Spartans, seem to have an instinctive knowledge about the use of Forerunner technology, but I dislike it as The Flood says Halo was built a hundred thousand years ago (or at least that's when 343 GS took control, I'm assuming the two are synonymous) which isn't long enough unless the local years are a lot longer than Earth years. I'd figured that, for that theory to be anywhere near helpful, they would have to have some precedent: something would have had to happen that would mean they knew that they would become parasites. I didn't think it would be a voluntary thing, because... who wants to turn into something like that? But if they were self-sacrificing and didn't particularly fancy the idea of munching on various bits of life in the universe and creating more parasites, it would make sense for the Halo's construction. Because the idea of them rounding up the Flood to put into the Halos strikes me as odd - it's proven that the Flood can be killed, as Master Chief demonstrates quite ably, so why keep them alive? They're not really something you can vaccinate against. :P Even if you can, the Forerunners don't appear to be around now... Althouth the universe is supposedly infinite, they could be anywhere. Of course, if they're not organic, then they wouldn't fear the Flood's body-eating tendancies, but then theoretically they could simply let the little buggers run around unchecked without any real fear for their own safety.
-
I always assumed that they kept some Flood specimens alive for study and simply to prevent the race going entirely extinct (that last one is a bit of a stretch and based entirely on 343 GS's admittedly eccentric comment 'I am so glad some of them survived to reproduce'), in which case they sound like a galactically minded species who might want to get rid of the flood simply because of the threat they pose to other species - admittedly destroying said species, but as the presence of Humans and Covenant show, others would be given the chance to evolve to fill their shoes. Besides, a non-organic form wouldn't necessarily save the Forerunner given the ease with which the Flood destroyed their drones. Tarot

True, but still, those Sentinels appeared to be fairly easy to dispatch by anyone. And I figured that GS was only really interested in them still being alive because he was... well... didn't appear all that sane to begin with. I guess spending however long he's been around simply staring at the Flood would send anyone loopy. (Still can't quite figure out why something that is basically a containment facility for the Flood has the kind of ecology the Halo does, though... Any ideas? I have some, but they may just be as weird as anything else I've said.) -Kachi

I wish I did. Personally if I was studying something as dangerous as the Flood and had the capabilities to build a ring world I'd go one step further and construct a full Dyson sphere - which is to say a hollow ball of metal constructed around a star - the benefits of which are, amongst other things, that it has walls that are at a minimum, several tens of kilometres thick. I'm not sure that humans have an instinctive knowledge about the Forerunner technology... the Covenant seemed quite at home with it, locking doors and whatnot, and I think MC would have been at a loss without Cortana to help, and as to the theories about her and the Halo...
-
Don't have the books to hand so I can't give quotes but at numerous times during their contact with Forerunner technology, the Spartans have had an instinct about what to do. This is assuming that the technology can't influence them somehow, or that their improbably smart brains aren't simply solving things for them subconsciously of course. Tarot

Aah, so it's only Master Chief who simply follows others around like a little lost lamb then. :P Books are expensive, so... I've not got around to buying any Halo ones yet. I only got the game some two or three weeks ago as it is... Damn this ARG, I've spent so much money just because of it... But still, the Covenant didn't appear to have too much trouble making the Halo do pretty much what they wanted, just like Cortana had no problem undoing what they had done. Maybe the Forerunners just left instructions like you see at Airports - in every language they could imagine. -Kachi
-
This shows how little there is to do at work occasionally. It's pointless to think about, and if it gets revealed in later games I'm so likely to be wrong, yet I can't seem to stop turning over theories in my head... :/ *sad and pathetic* -Kachi

Perhaps the crystals do enable time travel, if you know how to use them, and the Forerunners used them to escape destruction by Halo by traveling through time. So perhaps they went back in time, and somehow, current humans are related to them, hence why the Spartans seems to be familiar with what to do with Forerunner tech. Or perhaps they went forward in time and will actually show up in Halo 2 or furthur down the road . . I realize there are problems with this theory, but the thought hit me, and I had not seen that mentioned before . . - The Burnin8or
